Dr. Benjamin Martin of Optimal Chiropractic, Ballincollig has launched his Straighten Up campaign to promote better posture and spinal health among Irish children and adults. He launched the campaign with national school children from Kilmeen N.S, Clonakilty by showing them a 3 minute programme of everyday exercises which are suitable for all ages.
The “Straighten Up Ireland” Campaign is an on-going community service initiative of the Chiropractic Association of Ireland (CAI), and is an easy everyday programme to improve health and the way the body functions. This year, Straighten Up Ireland week will run from 10-16 October, leading up to World Spine Day on 16th October.
The Straighten Up programme consists of a set of simple exercises and taking just three minutes to complete, which will help improve posture, stabilise core muscle groups, enhance health and prevent spinal disability. The exercises can be undertaken by people of all ages with a special programme tailored for children. Research has shown an increase in slouched posture and related musculoskeletal disorders in countries with rising levels of computer usage.
Speaking of the campaign, Dr. Benjamin Martin of Optimal Chiropractic said, “Looking after our spines should be something we work on every day – just like brushing our teeth. I want to target children because good habits are formed at an early age. If we can get them into a programme of regular spinal exercises now, we can help them avoid back and neck problems later in life.”
He continued, “Posture is extremely important, possibly now more so than ever with so many leading sedentary lifestyles. Back and neck pain cause a great deal of suffering and cost taxpayers millions of euros in lost days each year, but a regular stretching programme can help improve posture and prevent pain. I’d encourage everyone to download the programme from the CAI website on www.chiropractic.ie or drop in to my clinic in Ballincollig to pick up a brochure and take just a few minutes each day to promote better spinal health and improve their quality of life.”
